Talking with . . . Starwood
Interviewed 8/17/2004 by
Brett VanPutHot on the
heels of the massively successful Velvet Revolver and the
Darkness; four Guys have formed a new energetic rock band called
Starwood. Their debut, If It Ain't Broke Break It, is out now.
Here is drummer Joey Scott.
Where did
the idea of a kick ass rock record evolve?
I'm glad you think so, thanks. Well, Lizzy and I put this project
together back in the early 90's and had a lot of fun doing it but
the timing wasn't right at the time so we shelved it till now. So
at this point we had an opportunity to actually put it out there
and see if others would like it so we did.
Why do you
think now is the best time for Starwood?
I think people are ready to start having fun again. Music is a
release and it seems when times are good music trends seem to
become introspective (and sometimes depressing) and when times are
not so good music trends get more rebellious and reflect a public
that wants to loose their cares about all the crap in the world
and just rock. |
How does the
Hollywood rock scene differ today when compared to the eighties?
The eighties rock scene was a mish mosh of 60's, 70's the current
scene is a mixture of everything from every decade from the 60's,
70's, 80's and 90's. So now you have many eclectic moods represented.
60's (excesses), 70's (emotional intenseness), 80's (calculated
excesses), 90's (uncontrolled emotional intenseness), now (all the
past rolled into one, but definitely the pendulum moving back toward
excess and letting go, basically starting to have fun again.
It must feel good to
just rock out with Starwood.
This is just balls out rock and roll so there's no script to follow
it's just have fun. We just go with the flow.
What do you think of
bands like Velvet Revolver and the Darkness- do you think their
popularity will enable the scene to become rejuvenated or are they
just exceptions?
No, absolutely this is a repeat of history. The swell of fans sick of
what they have been getting for the last ten years.
With the seriousness
of terror and war dominating our society, do you think most people
want their entertainment to be less serious and more fun?
Well, that's exactly
it. People want a release from all the crap. I have a personal
philosophy that music trends tend to follow politics and whenever
there is a republican in office you get more rock and rebellion
(people tend to associate republican with oppression) and when there
is a democrat you get introspective and more thought out moody music.
Rock music seems to be about not really caring about the mechanics
just the feelings behind it. It's like going from a mass meditation
with the dalilama to the riot in south central. It just points out
that all humans need a release at some point or you go crazy for good.
If you could choose
who you were to tour with, who would it be and why?
Well, right now it would be good to team up with the Darkness or
Velvet Revolver, but I would love to open up for Lenny Kravitz. Anyone
with the same message.
Do you think Lizzy
has what it takes to become a star? What are the live shows like?
Absolutely, he was born for it. He's got the thick skin and confidence
and most of all common sense. The shows are great lots of energy and
fun.
What do you enjoy
the most about Starwood?
The idea that we are
at the beginning of a new era and i t's something that we really feel
strong about and have a personnel fondness of. Also I like the way the
band just has a "lets just rock" attitude.
Oftentimes, when
lyrics are described as fun, it also means they are shallow- do you
think not having that lyrical or emotional depth is ever going to be
detrimental to Starwood or is it needed to further convey your good
time, energetic image?
Well, I think people like Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger
have shown that you can have both. You can be clever and have a good
time doing it. But having said that, I'm quit sure Einstein said,
"fuck it!" and then walked away smiling at one time or another. It
feels good to let go and not worry about thinking.
Final comments?
Just thanks for enjoying our music. Spread the word that we're coming.
